Survival Guide to Working on the Weekend and Holiday Happenings
We’re all on our holidays now (apart from the hassle of working Sunday) and that means it’s time to have fun. Kicking off with tonight. Those elegantly coiffured Gallic charmers AIR stay in town for one more gig at Yugong Yishan They were as smooth as you’d expect last night, their tight trousers proving a special delight for the ladies. An unexpected highlight of the night was opening trio Chasing Stars, who even cajoled notes from an accordion.
More accordion fun, if you can believe it, can be found at La Baie des Anges. Their live jazz and wine night has live jazz and wine, as you’d expect. Obiwan offers up Loose Booty, which is more to do with the shaking of rear ends than a pirate treasure free-for-all. DJs Joe and Steve spin the funky breaks to make those asses shake. Word.
Also tonight, Zhou Yunpeng, Xiao He and Top Floor Circus (pictured above) will all perform at a special concert being held to mark the end of this years Beijing Youth Theater Festival. The highlight of the show is likely to be Shanghai punk outfit Top Floor Circus (顶楼马戏团 Dinglou Maxituan) whose stuff Jon Campbell describes as “a Tom Waits-inspired off-kilter take on folk music.” RMB 80, students RMB 50. 8.30pm. You could always practice for Halloween at The Boat with their Death Disco. Anyone vamping it up as a goth space zombie, or similar, gets a free Stella.
The next big thing to hit town is Beijing’s very own Acupuncture Records first birthday celebrations on Sep 30. Help them blow out the candles and the speakers at Star Live as homegrown techno spins until the sun comes up.
More dancing until the sun rears it’s unwelcome head can be found later in the week at White Rabbit. The Midi after party for the Midi that might not be goes ahead regardless, with some of Beijing’s best manning the decks. To catch that, head underground from September 30th-October 2nd.
October 3rd marks the beginning of the end of your lovely holiday, but luckily it’s a packed weekend so you won’t have to think about that. Regular nights include the rock-tastic Beijing Calling (Obiwan), the funky as you like Git Some! (Q Bar) and the pop-tacular 80s night (Alfa). Musicology 2.0 pops up at Tango and the new microbrewery on the block, Drei Kronen 1308 in China View, officially opens its doors up to a Bavarian fanfare.
The last day of Room 101’s existence is on Oct 4, and you can help them go out in style by drinking them out of house and home. Drei Kronen’s Oktoberfest will start up for ten days of beerhall antics while Diversatility at Q Bar conjures up a musical mix.
To cap off the week, head over to The Saddle for Cinco de Drinko and enjoy half price drinks all day before catching some well-earned rest to restart work. Or throw caution to the wind and spend Monday at The Rickshaw’s Hair of the Dog party to enjoy the same offer. There you go, more fun than your livers and wallets can possibly handle.
